Behind the scene visits are always fun. Rehearsals (music, theater), artists’ studio, magazine shoots, movie sets, kitchens of 5 star restaurants etc. These settings are familiar to TV/movie audiences. What are not as frequently seen are the behind the scene activities of training schools (military and other uniformed), businesses, factories, government etc. These are typically more controlled, but when given access, could be just as fun, if not more so.
Brief synopsis of the event:
The Houston Fire Dept. Sirens organization, in association with HFD and Houston ISD, organized the inaugural Camp Houston Fire to encourage young women to consider the fire service as a career option. The camp was held over the weekend of February 26-28 at the HFD Training Academy in Houston, TX. Supervised activities included rappelling, forcible entry, search and rescue, emergency medical services, and a live burn.

It was very neat to be able to get up close to about 28 high school girls and shoot their reactions as they were introduced to the various types of situations a firefighter could face, and what sort of training they need to go through in order to prepare for most eventualities. At times, I was even tempted to try out some of the activities, especially rappelling from 5 floors up. However, with more than a few TV crews around doing the story too, I thought otherwise. No reason to be an unexpected news focus when the story should be about SIRENS and the high school kids. Leave it to the Professionals, they say. They know what they are doing.
A short photo essay on some of the activities the morning of the 27th.
