At the jogging path next between the Metro train station and the zoo train stop, this magnificent creature was sitting on the railing.
Had thought it might be an eagle. After crowd sourcing from some bird experts, I realized it was a hawk, of the juvenile kind. Maybe a red-tailed or red shouldered hawk, or Harris. You can already sense its pride.
Had the camera with me, but not the right lens. And I did not want to run back to the car to get the zoom in fear of the bird flying away. So I just started shooting and inching closer to it, in rapid fire mode.
I did not get close enough before it decided to fly off to a tree branch for a more dignified position.
Still, it was pretty cool to see this creature at eye level.
